The Consequence of Boredom

Peek-A-Boo

It's so nice to have a child-like moment in the "adult" working world. Today was the first day of the boss’ vacation, which basically leaves 7 college students to run a sandwich shop for a week and a half. Wow, that has reality TV written all over it. When Dave, the stereotypical stoner type, came in this afternoon, he immediately grabbed the giant bouncy ball and put the cleaning bucket at the opposite end of the kitchen. Impressively, the ball bounced right in on the first try. It was shortly after this that the ball lost all control, and I fled the scene before extensive damage was done. I'd say the week looks promising.
My return to childhood occurred today between the hours of 2 and 4 PM when very few normal American people venture out to enjoy a meal...in other words, it was quite slow. But one family, including a three or four year old boy, decided to break the mold and enjoy a mid-afternoon meal. Not surprisingly, this boy lost interest in his lunch very quickly and took to wandering about the restaurant to keep himself occupied. He started out standing behind the wall that separates the dining area from the back counter...and I saw a head poke slowly out from the wall, but naturally, as soon as he caught my eye and I smiled, he quickly withdrew. This continued repeated for a few minutes, and then, instead of a head, I saw a small foot creep out from behind the wall. He then moved to the edge of the front counter where I could see only a forehead and a set of curious eyes, and finally he moved to behind the half-wall and stood on a chair and again bobbed his head up over the wall and immediately out of sight again. It was a very fun game...and all I had to do was catch his eye and smile.

  • What is it with you and catching guy's eyes, smiling, (and making them jump behind a counter...j/k). And what's this I hear about you and D.? You've gotta fill me in on these things, Tracy! :-D Well, I hope your day went well. Talk to you soon. God bless!
